Welcome! I am a contemplative thinker and photographer from Colorado. In this blog, you'll discover photographs that I've taken on my hiking and backpacking trips, mostly in the American West. I've paired these with my favorite inspirational and philosophical quotes - literary passages that emphasize the innate spirituality of the natural world. I hope you enjoy them!

The Dark Side of Capitalism: Mark Twain's "Revised Catechism"

Q.  What is the chief end of man?
A.  To get rich.
Q.  In what way?
A.  Dishonestly, if we can, honestly if we must.
Q.  Who is God, the only one and true?
A.  Money is God - gold and greenbacks and stocks - father, son, and the ghost of the same - three persons in one: these are the true and only God, mighty and supreme; and William Tweed is his prophet.

Mark Twain, 1871, "Revised Catechism"

This is a parody on the "Westminster Catechism," which begins: "What is the chief end of man?  To glorify God, and fully enjoy him forever."  William Tweed was a corrupt politician in Twain's time.
