Welcome! I am a contemplative thinker and photographer from Colorado. In this blog, you'll discover photographs that I've taken on my hiking and backpacking trips, mostly in the American West. I've paired these with my favorite inspirational and philosophical quotes - literary passages that emphasize the innate spirituality of the natural world. I hope you enjoy them!

The human-like forms composing sand dunes teach us many valuable lessons.

Perhaps a major reason why we find the Great Sand Dunes so alluring is because in curve, shape, texture and color they resemble human forms. That being the case, these dunes can be quite instructive for how we might best live our lives. Like the dunes, the circumstances of our lives are continually shifting as the various winds of challenge rearrange the very things we imagined were most safe and secure. However, we can find comfort in the fact that just as the sand grains composing these dunes remain ever the same, so our own identity - underlying the changes we continually undergo - always remains stable and secure.

This is especially true when we make a practice of entering the desert of the heart in order to let go of the more superficial, unnecessary aspects of our identity. For we are ever rooted in our Source, the One whose love offers us stability and dignity in the midst of life's constant challenge and change.
