This week is the one year anniversary of the destructive floods that hit our area in Colorado on September 11th and 12th, 2013. Today I took this photo of a cabin located up the Big Thompson Canyon that stands as an icon of the flooding. Here, you can see the washer and dryer still holding on by their power cords, even though the floor has almost completely fallen out. Also visible is the mattress of a bed. The demolition crew was unable to get to the cabin before the river rose during this year's spring snowmelt, so it still looks much as it did a year ago.
The flooding damaged 19,000 homes and destroyed 1,500. It spread over a range of 200 miles from north to south. Boulder County, the worst hit, recorded 17 inches of rain over a one week period. Its normal YEARLY total is 20.7 inches.
