Welcome! I am a contemplative thinker and photographer from Colorado. In this blog, you'll discover photographs that I've taken on my hiking and backpacking trips, mostly in the American West. I've paired these with my favorite inspirational and philosophical quotes - literary passages that emphasize the innate spirituality of the natural world. I hope you enjoy them!

The joy we feel while out in wild country has epistemological value!

The joy we feel while out in wild country has epistemological value! That is, joy is not merely a subjective emotion, but is instead a way of knowing! Elation is a kind of "dance" - like that of a Sufi whirling dervish - that spins together such contrasts as Nature and Humanity, Non-personal and Personal, or Sacred and Ordinary, into an energetic Unity. Alternately, we might think of Joy as a kind of heat that melts the contrasts together into One!
