Welcome! I am a contemplative thinker and photographer from Colorado. In this blog, you'll discover photographs that I've taken on my hiking and backpacking trips, mostly in the American West. I've paired these with my favorite inspirational and philosophical quotes - literary passages that emphasize the innate spirituality of the natural world. I hope you enjoy them!

The shadow side of our personality is always accompanied by our enlightened side!

I am fascinated by the fact that the most beautiful times of day - in terms of light quality - occur on the border between light and dark, right at sunrise and sunset. Applied to our inner lives, this means that when we are struggling with the shadow side of our personality, our enlightened side is always present. In fact, the only reason why we can see the shadow side at all is because the light of our true self is present. Similarly, whenever we live in an enlightened way, it is only because the difficulties associated with our shadow side are present and have driven us there. Indeed, the shadowy egoic mentality is precisely the fuel we need which - in burning - is thereby able to provide us with the reality of enlightenment!
