Welcome! I am a contemplative thinker and photographer from Colorado. In this blog, you'll discover photographs that I've taken on my hiking and backpacking trips, mostly in the American West. I've paired these with my favorite inspirational and philosophical quotes - literary passages that emphasize the innate spirituality of the natural world. I hope you enjoy them!

A Copernican Revolution in Spirituality

In many of humanity's great mystical traditions, the world serves as a mirror in which the Great Beyond - the Creator - knows his own beauty and goodness. However, this kind of cosmology - when taken alone - often leads to a sense that the Earth has only temporary and less-than-ultimate value. This view in turn can be used to support a belief that we don't need to spend very much time and energy caring for the Earth - and reversing human-caused environmental degradation - since "heaven" is seen as our ultimate home. What I would propose is a kind of "Copernican Revolution" in spirituality, where the function of these two realities is reversed.

Here, the Great Beyond - God - is viewed as a vast, formless, loving and empty mirror in which the Sacred Presence indwelling the Earth knows and celebrates HER own beauty and goodness. In this kind of vision, we as human beings - as a participation in God's humble and self-emptying reality - are called to facilitate the EARTH'S celebration through our own spacious, formless awareness, one that is suffused with attitudes of awe, wonder and love. In my own case, my eye and camera lens are two ways I can help contribute to the Self-realization and Self-awakening of the Mother :)
