The Desert Varnish decorating sandstone cliffs in the American Southwest provides endless patterns of great beauty.
The varnish forms when rainwater dissolves manganese in the rock and then streaks down the cliff in shades or black, blue, chocolate, red and orange.

Whenever I see it, I think of Mother Earth's hair flowing down the rock in all of its grandeur.
