Welcome! I am a contemplative thinker and photographer from Colorado. In this blog, you'll discover photographs that I've taken on my hiking and backpacking trips, mostly in the American West. I've paired these with my favorite inspirational and philosophical quotes - literary passages that emphasize the innate spirituality of the natural world. I hope you enjoy them!

The Redrock Desert is a Goddess

The redrock desert is a Goddess who never fails to inspire my creativity, stimulate my thirst for beauty, and lure me forward on the spiritual journey through the profundity of her insights. In the Christian tradition, she is called Sophia. The early Greeks referred to her as Gaia, while Tibetan Buddhists view as as Prajnaparamita. The Dine' of the American Southwest see her as Mother Earth or Earth Woman, and the Hopi of Arizona experience her as Spider Woman, the one who whispers wisdom into our ears. By whatever name we call her, it is she who is the One who calls the shots in this land of waterfalls and desert-varnish streaked walls that are her hair . . . ,

in the voluptuous curves of her ruddy sandstone . . . ,

in the tangy-scented perfume of her sagebrush, and in a multitude of rocks that reveal the beauty of her multi-faceted face.

It is She who is the is the flow of energy that courses through our bodies, and without her, life would be utterly devoid of loveliness and of the vivifying aha! experience of insight. Even God, the Great Beyond, is so utterly enamoured by her presence that he empties himself in an ecstasy of joy into the vastness of her wide-open skies and wilderness spaces. Indeed, the cosmos is ultimately a love affair between Mother Earth and Father Sky, and we are privileged to participate in that amazing relationship!
